NDIS funding is divided into three categories: core supports, capital supports, and capacity building supports. Each serves a different purpose, and knowing the difference helps you get more out of your plan.

Capacity building is the part that invests in your future. It funds supports that build your independence, confidence, and capability over time, whether that means managing daily tasks on your own, connecting with your community, or working toward employment. Note that this funding is tied to specific sub-categories and cannot be moved between them.

What Is Capacity Building NDIS Funding?

Capacity building supports focus on skill development and long-term outcomes rather than ongoing daily assistance. The goal is to build independence, not replace it.

Here is how the three NDIS support categories compare:

  • Core supports fund everyday assistance such as personal care, community access, and social participation. Funding is flexible across its sub-categories.
  • Capital supports cover one-off investments such as assistive technology and home modifications.
  • Disability supports fund skill development, therapy, and long-term capability under the capacity building category. This budget is separate and cannot be used interchangeably with other categories.

Capacity building is most effective when aligned with your personal goals. Your support coordinator can help ensure your plan reflects what you are working toward at each review.

Not every participant will have capacity building funding. Whether it is included depends on your individual goals and circumstances discussed at your planning meeting.

What Supports Are Included in Capacity Building?

Capacity building is organised into several categories, each targeting a different area of a participant’s life and goals.

Support Coordination

Helps you understand your NDIS plan, connect with the right providers, and manage your supports with confidence. For complex needs, specialist support coordination is also available. Coastlink’s NDIS Support Coordination Central Coast team works with Central Coast participants to maximise funding and prepare for plan reviews.

Improved Daily Living

Funds therapy and skill-building programs that support everyday independence, including occupational therapy, speech therapy, behaviour support, and specialist behavioural intervention.

Social and Community Participation

Builds the skills and confidence to engage in community life through social skills programs, travel training, supported community access, and group programs. Coastlink’s group programs on the Central Coast help participants build confidence, friendships, and stronger community connections.

Employment Supports

Helps participants find and keep meaningful work through job coaching, workplace mentoring, and communication and organisational skill-building.

Health and Wellbeing

Supports participants to take an active role in their health through exercise programs, allied health services, mental health supports, and psychosocial recovery coaches.

Learning and Life Skills Development

Covers practical skills for independent living and further education, including cooking, budgeting, travel training, and financial management.

How Capacity Building Funding Helps Participants Achieve Their Goals

When capacity building supports are matched to a participant’s goals, the outcomes are lasting.

  • Building everyday independence. Occupational therapy and practical coaching help participants manage daily tasks with growing confidence, gradually reducing reliance on core supports.
  • Improving communication and social skills. Speech therapy and social skills programs help participants connect more effectively at home, in the community, and at work.
  • Increasing community participation. Community participation supports help participants move from assisted access to genuine inclusion, building stronger connections and greater independence.
  • Developing employment readiness. Employment supports build the practical skills and confidence needed to find, start, and sustain meaningful work.
  • Accessing therapy and professional support. Occupational therapy, speech therapy, and behaviour support contribute directly to improved daily living and stronger long-term outcomes.
  • Creating sustainable outcomes. Support coordinators keep capacity building funding focused on what matters most, with each plan review an opportunity to assess progress and stay on track.
